Why can't I get my engine to start?
It can be incredibly frustrating if you're out and about during your daily routine and all of the sudden your engine won't fire up. While some causes of no-start might be obvious, such as running out of gas, there are others that can be trickier to figure out. But whatever the reason is that your car won't start, the important thing is that you can get towed back home or to the shop ASAP. At Millennium Towing & Recovery we'll show up quickly to assist, whether you need a tow or roadside assistance in the greater Cincinnati area.
Common Causes of No-Start
Battery/charging system issues are commonly to blame for no-start. A variety of issues can cause batteries to die, such as: parasitic draws, loose/corroded connections, old age, a faulty alternator, and -- of course -- forgetting to turn off headlights. If you're dealing with a bad alternator, then you may notice such symptoms as malfunctioning interior electrical accessories, dimming/flickering headlights, and an illuminated dashboard warning light that reads ALT or GEN or lights up in the shape of a little battery.
Another common reason that cars won't start is that the starter is malfunctioning. A symptom of a faulty starter is that your engine won't fire up, but your dash lights turn on and you hear a clicking sound. A failing starter can also cause a grinding noise.
Fuel-related problems are also often to blame when an engine won't come roaring to life. A faulty fuel pump can cause trouble with starting up. Indications of a failing fuel pump include worsening MPGs, loss of power under load, sputtering, and a whining sound coming from the gas tank. A badly clogged fuel filter may also make it hard for your car to start. It's important to change out your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles to prevent engine issues. Also, dirty fuel injectors can cause issues with getting the engine to fire up. You can try using a fuel additive to eliminate contaminants from injectors.
