As towing professionals, we're also industry enthusiasts who love learning and sharing historical tidbits about our field. Here's a look at four fun facts about tow trucks.
The First Tow Truck
The first tow "truck" was a 1913 Cadillac. It belonged to Ernest Holmes, who rigged it up with a pully-and-crane attachment. Holmes filed his patent on January 17, 1918, and thus the towing industry began. Holmes' split-boom wrecker design became the basis for American military wreckers that were used during WWII. For many years, Holmes' design was also used by NASCAR and IndyCar.
There's a Tow Truck Museum
Ernest Holmes lived in Chattanooga, TN, and it's no coincidence that Chattanooga is now home to the International Towing Museum. Along with a number of towing-related artifacts, this museum also houses portraits of the members of the International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame.
Go North for Humongous Tow Trucks
Canada--with its extreme winter weather and robust trucking industry--is the nation with the biggest tow trucks. Up there, there are tow trucks that are so wide they actually take up multiple lanes on the highway.
Truck Drivers Love their Flatbeds
Flatbeds are the style of tow truck generally considered to be the easiest to operate. Also, they have a very low risk of causing damage to the vehicle being towed. For these reasons, tow truck drivers typically prefer driving them.
